As part of the grand opening celebration, employees from the Compton distribution center and Best Buy stores across Southern California built 40 bikes for Peace 4 Kids, a nonprofit that serves youth in the foster care system. The bikes will ensure those kids have transportation and, more importantly, something to truly call their own.


Tucked away in a fulfillment center about an hour's drive from New York City, Best Buy is using dozens of robots to sort through boxes of iPads, HP laptops, Beats by Dre headphones, DVDs, video games and more to ship to shoppers' homes.


There's much talk about the shipping wars between big-box retailers Walmart and Target and e-commerce giant Amazon. But Best Buy has likewise been chipping away at its delivery strategy for the past few years. It started shipping online orders from stores in 2014. Now it has three modern warehouse facilities, known as "metro e-commerce centers," up and running to help with the process. It should put the company in a more competitive position ahead of the 2019 holiday season.


"These centers complement our regional [distribution centers] along with our stores," Bass said. "There are other places around the country where this solution would be an overkill. ... We are always looking at our sourcing algorithm to figure out the right mix."


"Right now it seems to me [Best Buy] is farthest along in what I've called the holy grail of retail," Moody's retail analyst Charlie O'Shea said in an interview. "They have one pile of inventory in a distribution center both stocking stores and fulfilling online orders."


It's using state-of-the-art machines at its three metro e-commerce centers, including in Piscataway, that precisely trim cardboard around items ranging from headphones to iPads and make boxes on the spot, fit to size. A machine can cut about 15 boxes every minute.

The Best Buy project consisted of the fast-track construction of a 700,000-ft2 distribution center on roughly 100 acres of undeveloped land in Dublin, Georgia. GEC provided construction quality control services to Best Buy on the project. GEC engineers recommended the installation of a successful french drain system that greatly enhanced the quality and speed of construction on this project. GEC also worked with the grading contractor in the blending of high plasticity and sandy soils to lower the plasticity. This significantly reduced the amount of undercutting and soil wasting necessary. Because this was a fast-track project, GEC technicians were onsite nearly around the clock to provide testing services. The project was completed in less than 12 months.


Particularly as logistics companies like FedEx, UPS, and the USPS continue to struggle with unprecedented demand, the retailers that will be best-equipped to meet holiday demand will be the ones who can also ship out orders from their own stores, which may be closer to many customers than fulfillment centers.


This year is especially important, as analysts project more people to shop online this holiday season compared to last. Particularly as people do more shopping in general closer to the holidays, that will make it harder for carriers to deliver packages within a timely manner. If a big-box retailers wants to offer one or even two-day shipping, it may make more sense to ship that order out from a store versus a fulfillment center.


Best Buy expects to hire at least 40 new full-time workers at the center, which will be developed by Seefried Industrial Properties and 4M Investments. A groundbreaking date has not yet been scheduled.


"This distribution center will have a tremendous economic impact on Missouri City, not only through primary jobs but also as a long-term property tax generator, Joe Esch, the city's economic development director, said in a statement.


Best Buy had been looking to open a new distribution center in the Houston area for some time. The retailer decided to build in Missouri City because of its proximity to interstate highways, the local workforce, availability of land for development and economic incentives, spokesman Jeff Shelman said.


Best Buy's Missouri City facility will complement a larger regional distribution center in Ardmore, Okla., that serves 200 stores in the region. Most of Best Buy's products in Houston stores are shipped from Oklahoma.


"The traditional industrial submarkets are all built out," Charlie Meyer, Hines' industrial director, said. "Fort Bend County is one of the fastest growing counties in the area. You can serve Katy all the way down into Rosenberg and out to the Medical Center. It's a good local distribution location."

(58,500-sq.-m.) facility, which will serve stores in 10 Northeast U.S. states, is the eighth distribution center established by Best Buy, the No. 1 U.S. specialty retailer of consumer electronics. "As we rebuild in New York City, we will continue to show the world that major corporations like Best Buy know that the Empire State is an ideal business location," said Gov. George Pataki, who announced the project at Tioga County's Business 2001 show, "Helping America Get Back to Business." "Choosing Tioga County for this significant US$40 million, 400-job investment provides tremendous confidence for the upstate economy and sends a strong nationwide message for businesses to invest here," Pataki added. Construction of the facility is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2002, with completion projected for early 2003, according to Best Buy officials. Best Buy is adding between 60 to 65 new stores annually, most of them spanning 45,000 sq. ft. (4,050 sq. m.). The distribution center in Nichols will reflect that expansion: Initially serving 59 stores in 10 Northeastern U.S. states, the New York center will eventually serve 140 stores, according to Best Buy officials. Ron Dougherty, acting director of Tioga County Economic Development and Planning (www.developtioga.com), called the announcement "an economic development home run for Tioga County." Tioga County had spent 13 years marketing the 150-acre tract, located just off Route 17 (which will become part of I-86). Campbell Soup Co. considered the property for a manufacturing plant in the late 1980s. Subsequently, during the 1990s, a number of other major firms - including DaimlerChrysler, Gap, Lowe's, Micron Technology and Target - investigated the acreage as a possible manufacturing or distribution location. Best Buy, however, is the first of the property's many prospective suitors to commit to tying the knot. 'Shovel-Ready' Site Helped Seal Deal


In 1999, Best Buy, which is headquartered in Richfield, MN, announced that Dublin would be the home of their distribution center to serve the Southeastern U.S. market. The 850,000 square foot facility sits on approximately 100 acres and currently employs 215 people.

All those TVs and large appliances require foam packaging to keep them safe on the journey from manufacturer to distribution center to customer. Last year, Best Buy handled 3.5 million pounds of expanded polystyrene packaging, or EPS.

Best Buy will occupy one half of a distribution center at ProLogis ParkMinhang, a new industrial park under development in Shanghai. The companywill use the building to support retail stores in the Shanghai market. Thepark, which will comprise five warehouses totaling over 600,000 square feet(55,700 square meters), is now 100 percent pre-leased.
