Introduction to VessRAID

The VessRAID 1840s is a storage subsystem that provides high performance, reliability, and scalability for data-intensive applications. It supports up to 16 SAS or SATA disk drives and can be configured as a single or dual controller system. It also supports RAID levels 0, 1, 1E, 3, 5, 6, 10 (0+1), 30, 50, and 60 for data protection and performance optimization. The VessRAID 1840s can be managed through a web-based interface, a command-line interface, or an SNMP agent.

Architectural Description

The VessRAID 1840s consists of the following components:

  • A chassis that houses the disk drives, power supplies, fans, and controllers.

  • A controller module that contains the CPU, memory, cache, battery backup unit (BBU), and host and drive interfaces.

  • A disk drive module that contains the disk drive, drive tray, and LED indicators.

  • A power supply module that provides power to the subsystem and has an AC inlet, a power switch, and a fan.

  • A fan module that cools the subsystem and has an LED indicator.

The VessRAID 1840s supports two types of host interfaces: Fibre Channel (FC) and iSCSI. The FC interface supports up to four 4 Gb/s ports per controller and can be connected to FC switches or hosts. The iSCSI interface supports up to four 1 Gb/s ports per controller and can be connected to Ethernet switches or hosts. The VessRAID 1840s also supports two types of drive interfaces: SAS and SATA. The SAS interface supports up to 16 SAS disk drives with a maximum capacity of 2 TB each. The SATA interface supports up to 16 SATA disk drives with a maximum capacity of 4 TB each.

Features and Benefits

The VessRAID 1840s offers the following features and benefits:

  • High performance: The VessRAID 1840s delivers high throughput and low latency for data-intensive applications such as database, video streaming, backup, and virtualization. It also supports multiple host protocols and RAID levels for flexible configuration and optimization.

  • High reliability: The VessRAID 1840s provides data protection and fault tolerance through RAID technology, BBU, hot-swappable components, redundant power supplies and fans, online capacity expansion, online RAID level migration, bad block auto-remapping, SMART monitoring, and error recovery.

  • High scalability: The VessRAID 1840s can be expanded up to 112 disk drives by adding up to seven JBOD enclosures. It also supports dynamic volume expansion and dynamic volume set expansion for increasing the storage capacity without downtime.

  • Easy management: The VessRAID 1840s can be managed through a web-based interface that provides a graphical user interface (GUI) for monitoring and configuring the subsystem. It also supports a command-line interface (CLI) for scripting and automation. Additionally, it supports an SNMP agent for integrating with network management systems.
